This summer, my research through the Center for Applied Psychophysiology and Self-Regulation is to determine whether the standard deviation of respiratory rate is a good measure for autonomic balance.  If this is true, then it would be a simple way for health professionals to administer biofeedback or self-regulatory techniques without complicated and expensive equipment.  It would also be applicable to the development of physiologically controlled video games for individuals with disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorder or Substance Abuse Disorders.
