The Golisano Institute for Sustainability is currently located in a 170,000 square foot facility on the campus of RIT. Researchers have easy access to 6 large manufacturing bays and 21 specialized labs featuring state-of-the-art equipment. The facility also includes a 10 room, 400 seat training and conference center with smart capabilities.

GIS%u2019s laboratory facilities include:

Reliability Lab

Reliability lab photoThe Reliability Lab focuses on testing the durability and reliability of components with the goal of enhancing the quality and performance of the entire system.

Equipment includes:

  • Highly Accelerated Life Tester (HALT)
  • Weathering Station
  • INSTRON Testing Machine

Materials Engineering Lab

Materials Engineering Lab photoThis laboratory provides analysis of how the physical and mechanical properties of components meet desired design characteristics.

Equipment includes:

  • Scanning Electron Microscope with Elemental Analysis

Systems Performance and Reliability Lab

Systems Performancce and Reliability lab photoThe lab focuses on researching the life cycles of components and systems to properly understand and predict aging and wear while utilizing this data to enhance overall performance.

Equipment includes:

  • 300 Horsepower Transmission Dynamometer
  • Servo Hydraulic Tensile and Fatigue Tester

Integrated Diagnostics and Prognostics Lab

The Integrated Diagnostics and Prognostics Laboratory is used to develop components, software, and integrated systems for the evaluation and implementation of diagnostics technology for in-the-field environments.

Equipment includes:

  • Network Analyzer
  • Switch Matrix
  • Dynamic Audio Signal Analyzer

Imaging Products Laboratory

The lab provides state-of-the-art evaluation and research to enhance the sustainability of imaging products and systems through improved testing procedures and the utilization of sustainable design capabilities.

Equipment includes:

  • Xenon Arc Ultra Violet Test Chamber
  • Ozone Test Chamber

Rapid Reverse Engineering Lab

When products are recovered from end-of-life, specifications, such as material requirements and dimensional tolerances, are often unavailable. The Rapid Reverse Engineering Lab is equipped with instruments to accurately reconstruct missing product information to enable new production, improve design and enhance opportunities for remanufacturing and reuse.

Equipment includes:

  • Coordinate Measuring Machine
  • 3D Laser Scanner
  • Optical Measuring System

Clean Technologies Demonstration Facility

The facility features a wide variety of cleaning machines utilized for alternative cleaning testing and demonstration. Engineers utilize the equipment to develop and implement technologies that will prevent pollution and reduce costs to companies.

Vehicle Integration Facility

This facility features equipment related to the integration of sustainable design technologies into vehicle systems and includes equipment related to life cycle engineering, material restoration and accelerated aging. Engineers are currently working with an EA-6B Prowler Jet, 3 US Marine Corps Light Armored Vehicles, an MTVR 16 ton truck and a High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV).

Equipment includes:

  • Portable Thermal Spray Unit
  • Welding Facilities
  • Remote Diagnostics and Logistics Hardware and Software Capabilities
  • Common Operating Picture (COP) Capabilities
